Punahou 88 is an ongoing interview series in which I try to interview as many fellow members of the Punahou School Class of 1988 as possible, free time permitting. Across interviews, I cover a few core topics, starting with family history, moving through childhood in the 1970s, touching on identity, money, religion, language, underage drinking, cliques, intellectual awakenings, and ending at graduation in June 1988 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Where possible I've integrated, Ken Burns-style, historic photos sourced from my generous interviewees.
Naturally, everyone I interview was born around the same time (1969-1970) and spent their formative years in the same place: a beautiful island archipelago in the center of the Pacific Ocean, home to multiple, intersecting cultures and immigration stories.
I view the Punahou 88 interviews as a lens on history, culture and personal growth. More importantly, I'm having a ton of fun bringing to life the personalities of a group of very impressive, memorable people.
I hope you find these interviews entertaining, revelatory and inspiring, whether you are a member of the Class of 88 or a friendly stranger with an interest in personal history.
A huge mahalo to my Class of 88 interviewees, who as you'll discover from these conversations, are incredibly candid and generous with their memories and accumulated wisdom.
Stay tuned for more episodes. . .
Aloha!
